A Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos on Tuesday slammed a N1 million bail on a septuagenarian, Abel Akindana, for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl.

Akindana, 75,who resides at Mafowoku Street, Fadeyi, Lagos, is standing trial on a charge of defilement.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, said the bail condition for the accused would be stringent because the offence stipulates life imprisonment.

``The offence is a serious one and attracts life imprisonment. It is bailable, but the bail condition will be stringent.

``The defendant is hereby admitted to a bail of N1million with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must own houses in Lagos State,’’ she ruled.

In addition, she said one of the sureties must be a recognised community or religious leader, while the other should be a blood relation of the accused.

``The sureties must show evidence of tax payment and gainful employment.”

Earlier the prosecutor, ASP Godwin Anyanwu, had told the court that Akindana committed the offence sometime in March.

He said the accused took advantage of the nine-year-old girl, the daughter of his co-tenant.

``He had sexual intercourse with the girl in his room six times in March when her parents were not at home.

``He took advantage of her innocence and defiled her," the prosecutor alleged.

Anyanwu said the case was reported to the police after the child had revealed the ``amorous relationship’’ to her mother.

The septuagenarian pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The case has been adjourned to July 16 for hearing.
