Nigeria - Shell has shut down the Trans Niger pipeline it uses to transport Nigerian crude oil Bonny Light to an export depot, barely a week after it declared force majeure on Nigeria’s Forcados crude oil stream, Punch reports.
The pipeline has been shut since May 12, a Shell spokeswoman said on Thursday.
The Trans Niger Pipeline transports around 180,000 barrels per day of crude oil to the Bonny Export Terminal and is part of the gas liquids evacuation infrastructure critical for continued domestic power generation at the Afam VI power plant and liquefied gas exports, Shell said on its website.
Shell said the closure had not led to a force majeure declaration but would not otherwise comment on exports.
Force majeure is a chance occurrence or unavoidable accident. It is a common clause in contracts that essentially frees both parties from liability or obligation when an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond the control of the parties prevents one or both parties from fulfilling their obligations under the contract.
