Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy President of the Senate, is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review.

Between 2007 and 2011, he was in charge of the committee that attempted to make substantive amendments to the 1999 constitution after two failed attempts in the previous legislative sessions.

The selfsame Ekweremadu is back again with another fundamental adjustment for the Committee before mid next year.

He spoke with newsmen, giving his position on the polity and what he believed would solve the currently raging political issues.

Ekweremadu, who was Senate President David Mark’s associate in postulating the Doctrine of Necessity, said that the invocation of another doctrine of necessity for extending president Jonathan’s tenure and other serving governors to 2017 (for the realization of single tenure) may just be what the country needs at this time.

Anticipating some problems with the idea, he said, “You see, some of those who are fighting the president, I hear that their complaint is that if the president gets a second term when they are gone that they may start chasing them. Now if we agree that that could be a way to solve the problem, after two years both the president and those other governors will now exit and the fear will not be there and I believe it will bring down the temperature of politics.”

He added that, judging by what happened in Anambra, extending the tenure to 2017 will give INEC ample time to regroup and be better prepared to conduct the general elections.
