Philip Aguer, the spokesman for South Sudan Army (SPLA), said in Addis Ababa on Wednesday that government forces had advanced on the rebel-held town of Bor.
"The rebels are moving south from Bor and the SPLA is moving toward Bor,’’ he said.
The announcement came ahead of the peace talk in Ethiopia with focus on finding ways to roll out and monitor the ceasefire, Reuters reported.
Aguer said both sides had agreed in principle to a ceasefire but neither had indicated when the fighting would stop.
He declined to say how many government troops were moving toward Bor but estimated that over 7,000 rebels were in the area.
Aguer added that SPLA troops were reorganising to win back Bentiu, the capital of Unity State in the country's north.
