South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir in a decree read out on state television yesterday has sacked Gen. James Hoth Mai, the head of the army with immediate effect.
While no official reason was given for the removal of Gen James Hoth Mai, analysts say the military has suffered several setbacks in the north of the country in recent days.
Particular among the setbacks was the seizure of Bentiu, a major oil hub, by rebels loyal to sacked vice president Riek Machar on April 15 and 16.
The Rebels reportedly went further to unleash a two-day ethnic slaughter in which the UN says hundreds of civilians were hunted down in mosques, churches and a hospital.
Gen Paul Malong was named as the new general head of staff.
Kiir also sacked his intelligence chief, General Paul Mach, replacing him with General Marial Nour Jok.
