Stomach cancer is usually not found at an early stage because it often does not cause specific symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may be vague and can include those listed below. It’s important to remember that these symptoms can also be caused by many other illnesses, such as a stomach virus or an ulcer.
----
1. Indigestion or Heartburn: Indigestion, heartburn or symptoms similar to an ulcer may be signs of stomach cancer. But most people who have indigestion do not have stomach cancer.
2. Pain or discomfort in the belly: Abdominal discomfort or pain in the abdomen above the navel could be a symptom of stomach cancer. Also, swelling or fluid build-up in the abdomen may also be caused by stomach cancer.
3. Nausea and vomiting, particularly vomiting up solid food shortly after eating: Some stomach cancer patients have symptoms that include nausea and throwing up. Sometimes the vomit may have blood in it.
4. Diarrhea or constipation.
5. Poor appetite (no desire to eat): Feeling sick, and being off food. Some people have a sense of fullness after eating.
6. Sensation of food getting stuck in the throat while eating.
7. Feeling full after eating small amounts of food: Many stomach cancer patients experience a sense of "fullness" in the upper abdomen after eating small meals Many stomach cancer patients experience a sense of "fullness" in the upper abdomen after eating small meals.
8.Low red blood cell counts (anemia) which can cause you to feel tired or short of breath with just walking.
9. Weakness and fatigue: Feeling generally unwell and more tired than usual.
1o. Vomiting Blood or Having Blood in the Stool: You may pass blood out with your stools (faeces). This usually presents as black faeces (called melaena) or dark blood rather than bright red bleeding - which is more unusual with stomach cancer - and implies very serious bleeding in the stomach or bowel.
11. Unexplained Weight Loss: Losing your appetite and losing weight are often later symptoms and can be a sign that the cancer is more advanced. Although some people with early stomach cancer lose their appetite too.
---
It is advisable you always see your doctor about one or more of the symptoms on this list. This will help find out the cause of the problem and administer proper treatment.
