Nigeria - The Rivers Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Chika Onuegbu, on Friday urged the incoming administration led by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the subsidy claims by oil marketers.

In an interview in Port Harcourt he also urged the Federal Government to seek alternative to subsidy to address economic challenges being faced by the country.

He said that subsidy claims were given to ``selfish’’ individuals to the disadvantage of the ordinary Nigerians.

``Much of the fuel subsidy payments are framed up to favour marketers mainly, who are now blackmailing the Federal Government with their claims.

``We must also as a country, decide whether we must continue with fuel subsidy or find better alternatives,’’ Onuegbu said.

The TUC chairman, stressing on probity and accountability, also called on the incoming government to investigate the subsidy management, saying it was imperative to penalise persons or institutions found culpable in the subsidy programme.

He said the President-elect retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, should investigate the subsidy scheme, recover every kobo paid in error or fraudulently and punish any person who stole from subsidy.
