The position of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, in which he appears to be sympathetic to the cause of Boko Haram terrorist group, has been described as “depressing, counter-productive and very dangerous,” by the member representing Jos South/Jos East constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Bitrus Kaze.

The lawmaker in a press statement issued yesterday denounced the Sultan’s position, especially at a time that the war against terror is gaining global momentum following the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok.

Kaze observed that, “As a retired Colonel of the Nigerian Army, whose last duty post was Pakistan, the hotbed of global terrorism, the Sultan should understand better the implications and inevitability of the use of force in Nigeria’s counter- insurgency efforts”, adding that “no counter-insurgency strategy can be sustained anywhere in the world without the military and without the use of force.”

Of course he is sympathetic. If a Christian insurgent group sprung up today, there would be pastors secretly in bed with their mission statement. This is just the way things are.

With that said, Guns don't kill people. People kill people and as Martin Luther King said, history will have to remember not just the wickedness of the evil, but the resounding silence of the good.

You would be surprised the weight of conviction the Sultan probably has, that Boko Haram is an Act of God. He'd probably be more sympathetic if there weren't any implications.

Ugh.
