The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it was temporarily halting investigation into the building collapse at the guest house of The Synagogue Church of All Nations in Ikotun, Lagos.
Mr Aderemi Ibirogba, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, announced the step in Ikeja while giving newsmen an update on the government’s actions after the incident.
Ibirogba said the state government was suspending investigation because the Federal Government had also set up a panel to investigate the incident.
The commissioner said that the state took the step so as not to look as if it was working at cross purposes with the Federal Government on the issue.
He said the tragedy had both national and international dimensions as not only Nigerians died, but also nationals of other countries, especially South Africa.
Ibirogba said the state was working in tandem with all parties to get to the root of the issue and forestall a recurrence.
"We are all aware that that the Federal Government has set up a committee. What we are saying is that in order not to preempt the work of the committee, the best thing for us is to put things on hold.
"We are, however, working with the Federal Government on a comprehensive report of what really happened, as the state government has a representative in the committee set up by the FG. Until the committee comes up with the report, we cannot say anything about the situation,’’ he said.
On whether the collapsed structure was built without approval from the state government, Ibirogba said that the building was not authorised by the state Physical Planning Ministry.
He, however, said the anticipated report would give details about the cause of the problem and how such could be prevented in the future.
The six-storey guest house at the church collapsed on September 12, leaving scores dead and many injured. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it recovered 86 dead bodies from the site and rescued 131 injured.
South African government officials, however, said their country lost 84 citizens who were visiting the church in the incident.
