US president Barack Obama has called for military action against the Syrian government, but he will wait for Congressional approval.
Speaking outside the White House on Saturday, Mr Obama said he was ready to act without UN approval, citing "profound" implications for US national security.
He reiterated that any intervention would be "limited in duration and scope" pledging that no US combat troops would be deployed on the ground in Syria.
This mean no action will be taken before Congress gathers next on September 9.
He did not say what would happen if his proposal was rejected.
A Syrian security official who wished to remain anonymous said the country was expecting an assault "at any moment," adding authorities were ready to retaliate.
As a result, Syrians are fleeing the country to escape the looming military strikes.
