Metro Taraba Hajj Leader, 2 Wives Confirmed Dead In Saudi Stampede

The Taraba State Amirul Hajj for the 2015 pilgrimage, Abass Ibrahim and his two wives have been confirmed dead in Thursday's stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia. The Amirul Hajj is the first class traditional ruler of Zing.

The incident was confirmed by the chairman of the board, Hamman-Adam Tukur to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview from Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Tukur explained that the emir died on Thursday during a stampede that claimed the lives of more than 700 pilgrims at the site of the Jamrat, where they were to fulfill the symbolic stoning of the devil.

Mr. Tukur confirmed that the body of the deceased traditional ruler had been recovered and buried in Mecca on Friday.

He also disclosed that many other indigenes of Taraba were still missing while a few others who suffered injuries were receiving treatment in some Saudi hospitals.

Confirming the incident, Chief Press Secretary to Taraba Governor, Hassan Mijinyawa said, consultation was still ongoing between the government and the Zing Traditional Council before a formal pronouncement would be made.

The late emir was said to be aged 62 and has been on the Zing Traditional Council throne for 19 years.
