Entertainment The Reasons Jay Z Plotted Armand De Brignac Champagne Take-Over

Why Jay Z Bought Into Armand de Brignac Champagne

The rapper known as Jay-Z is, first and foremost, a businessman. Forbes Magazine estimates his net worth at approximately $520 million. When it comes to making money, Jay-Z knows what he is doing. That is why his recent purchase of the Armand de Brignac brand of champagne has been making headlines. It looks like Jay-Z just happened to be at the right place at the right time with his investments. But, as with most events in show business, things are not what they appear to be.

How It All Started

In 2006, Jay-Z released a music video for the song "Show Me What You Got" that featured the artist displaying and drinking the Armand de Brignac brand of champagne. Jay-Z's video helped the champagne to earn its nickname "Ace of Spades" thanks to its distinct logo on the bottle label.

The story that the Armand de Brignac people tell is that Jay-Z saw a bottle of the champagne in a New York City liquor store and decided he wanted to feature it in his video. But the Armand de Brignac champagne did not start shipping to New York until months after the video had premiered. So what is really going on?

The Fall Of Cristal

Prior to the rise of Armand de Brignac champagne, the $300 per bottle choice of drink among hip hop artists was Cristal. In 2006, Cristal company manager Frederic Rouzaud publicly commented on his dismay that gangster hip hop artists were buying Cristal and making it part of the hip hop scene.

Jay-Z is not a gangster rapper, but he is a smart businessman who seized on an opportunity. Jay-Z started a movement to ban Cristal because of what he perceived to be racist comments by Rouzaud. A short time after Jay-Z called for a boycott of Cristal, he released his video showing Armand dr Brignac. It was soon found out that the two events were not a coincidence.

Why And When Jay-Z Really Bought Armand de Brignac

Sovereign Brands introduced Armand de Brignac champagne in 2006 and Jay-Z was an investor right from the beginning. He used the Internet to help expand his boycott of Cristal and it caught on like wild fire. Then he used his videos to portray the suit-wearing hip hop society drinking Armand de Brignac for $300 per bottle.

Famous New York wine expert Lyle Fass says that Armand de Brignac is not worth $300 per bottle. But with some clever marketing and Internet viral advertising, Jay-Z has turned his eight year investment into a fortune. Now that Jay-Z completely owns the Armand de Brignac brand, look for it to take off even further and push Jay-Z even higher up the list of the richest people in entertainment.
