A grieving father is now effusive in his gratefulness to Reddit users who retouched the only image he had of his daughter, removing the hospital tubes from the picture. His daughter died when she was six weeks old.
The man, Nathen Steffel, of Ohio, reached out to the Reddit users on the forum by posting a photo of his daughter (her name was Sophia). The baby had died from complications resulting from a hepatic hemangioma (a form of tumor) at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Columbus.
His daughter had had to be hospitalized since the day she was born and as a result they couldn’t get a picture of her without the hospital tubes until she died. The baby had been transferred to specialists in the hospital and was put on a waiting list for a liver transplant. She never made it, as she died on the tenth of July.
His post on Reddit was: "Photoshop Request: My daughter recently passed away after a long battle in the children's hospital. Since she was in the hospital her whole life we never were able to get a photo without all her tubes. Can someone remove the tubes from this photo?”
The response to his request was heartwarming. Several users quickly sent their versions of the girl without the hospital tubes. The responses were not from Photoshop users alone – there were sketches and oil paint impressions of baby Sophia.
It was a touching moment indeed. One Redditor commented: "I teared up thinking about being in your place", and another said “I recently had a daughter. I can’t even begin to imagine your pain. You have my deepest condolences.”
Reddit user tacothecat was especially appreciated for their version (which Mr Steffel described as ‘awesome’).
He said: "My wife and I were so grateful so many people took the time out of their own lives to either send a nice message of sympathy or an awesome drawing."
Don’t give up on the humans. There are good people still
