Tokyo awarded hosting rights for the 2020 Olympics

Japan’s capital,Tokyo has won the rights to host the 2020 Olympics beating off challenges from Madrid and Istanbul.
Madrid was eliminated in the first round of voting leaving Tokyo and Istanbul to battle it out for the ticket.
But it was the Japanese capital that emerged tops,winning a majority of second-round votes from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in Buenos Aires,Argentina.
It will be the second time that Japan would host the Olympics since the last one in 1964,making them the first Asian country to do so.
But Madrid would be very disappointed,thrice coming close to hosting the Olympics and missing out on the three occasions.
There were initial scepticism over the impact of the Fukushima nuclear plant that brought Tokyo to its knees,following a devastating earthquake in 2011,but Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,in a personal address calmed all frayed nerves.
“It has never done, and will never do any damage to Tokyo,” Abe assured,
