The outbreak of meningitis in northern Nigeria has claimed 489 people as at Tuesday, health minister, Isaac Adewole, announced.

A total of 4,637 cases of cerebrospinal meningitis were recorded across the country by Monday and the ministry had announced last Friday that the death toll was 428.

Adewole said among the cases, 171 were confirmed to be the Type C meningitis with Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Niger and Kebbi states most affected.

So far 823,000 doses of conjugated Type C had been delivered to the Federal Government by the UK government, while UNICEF had delivered over 1 million Type A of the vaccines.

Furthermore, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III on Tuesday convened an emergency meeting of northern state governors to tackle the outbreak.

The outbreak is sweeping through the country and if quick steps aren't taken to arrest it, it could wreak a devastating havoc on the nation.
