Nigeria - The Trade Union Congress in Rivers state has tasked president-elect of the federal republic of Nigeria, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on the tackling of corruption in the country. The union urged him to pass into law the offence of unexplained wealth, which will attract a 20 year jail term. Naitonal Mirror reports:
Organised labour said the President- Elect; General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) must be dogged in the fight against corruption and the elimination of waste in governance through strengthening the institutions that fight corruption in the country.
According to labour, the incoming president must adopt a truly zero tolerance approach to corruption and waste of public funds; and more importantly, pass into law the offence of unexplained wealth in Nigeria and ensure that offenders are properly dealt with in accordance with the nation’s laws.
The Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State, Mr Chika Onuegbu, told National Mirror on Tuesday, that the offence of unexplained wealth, which can also be called office of possession of unexplained wealth will penalize people for possessing wealth disproportionate to their known lawful sources of income if they cannot provide a satisfactory explanation for this.
