Turkey has reportedly shot down a Russian fighter jet near its border with Syria.
Turkey claims the jet violated its airspace near the Syrian border; THE INDEPENDENT reports. A military official, quoted by Turkey's Dogan news agency, said the plane was shot down by Turkish F16s, and that the pilot was given prior warning.
Television footage released by Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency appeared to show two pilots parachuting out of downed jet. Russia has repeatedly carried out air strikes in Syria in defence of President Bashar al-Assad.
