Senior Conservative British politician Nigel Evans has resigned as deputy speaker of the House of Commons after authorities said they would charge him with offenses including sexual assault and rape.
Mr. Evans was elected in 2010 as one of three deputy speakers.
The Wall Street Journal said the head of the Crown Prosecution Service on Tuesday alleged Mr. Evans to have committed eight offenses, including two counts of indecent assault, five counts of sexual assault and one count of rape. The alleged offenses involve seven male victims, between 2002 and 2013.
The 55-year old deputy speaker who was arrested earlier this year denies any wrong doing, calling the complaints “incredulous”.
“I am certain of two things: firstly that I am innocent, and secondly that my innocence will be demonstrated,” he said to newsmen.
He announced his resignation and said he plans to continue to represent his constituents in Ribble Valley, Lancashire, northwest England.
He has served in parliament for more than two decades as a member of Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party.
He is due to appear before a magistrate’s court on Sept. 18.
