Ugandan Army Spokesman, Paddy Ankunda, on Friday, said Ugandan soldiers had been dispatched to South Sudan to help evacuate stranded Ugandan citizens.
The spokesman said the Ugandan government was worried over fighting that erupted in South Sudan this week, which, according to him, threatens to plunge the nation into war.
The army spokesman said ``we have military personnel in Juba [South Sudan] but they are there strictly to help rescue and evacuate stranded Ugandans, some of whom are injured.
``Our personnel are there at the request of South Sudan government, we are not involved in any military activity there.’’
He denied a report in a state-owned newspaper that the troops would also help secure Juba.
The Ugandan Minister of State for International Affairs, Okello Oryem, was part of a mission of African ministers and other mediators who held talks with Kiir in Juba to try to broker peace.
