The UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) called upon all actors to help stop child recruitment by armed groups in the DRC, a UN spokesman, Martin Nesirky said on Thursday.
According to a report published on Thursday, almost 1,000 cases of child recruitment by armed groups were verified by MONUSCO between Jan. 1 last year and Aug. 31 this year, predominantly in North Kivu in the eastern DRC, Nesirky said.
"Children who were victim of recruitment within the ranks of these armed groups were also victims and witnesses of other grave child rights violations, such as rape, abduction, killing and maiming,’’ he said.
Recruiting and using children under the age of 15 as soldiers is prohibited under international humanitarian law -- treaty and custom -- and is defined as a war crime by the International Criminal Court. (Xinhua/NAN)
