The Burundian Government has ordered an official working for the UN Office for Burundi (BNUB) to leave the country within 48 hours after he was caught carrying arms at the Bujumbura International Airport.

Abednego Mutua was caught by immigration police in possession of two chargers full of ammunition at the airport on May 25, said Daniel Kabuto, a spokesman for the Burundian External Relations and International Cooperation Ministry.

The spokesman was quoted as saying that Mutuna, a Kenyan national, was prevented from taking his flight after police searched his handbag and found the ammunition.

Kabuto said the UN official violated the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, and attempted to tarnish Burundi's image by showing that arms freely circulate without control.

Mutua was the second UN official expelled from Burundi in less than two months.
