Murray was unstoppable in the first set, racing on to an early lead, and he consolidated in the second set.

However Kuznetsov regrouped and took the third set,but he could not sustain the tempo as he gave up,with Murray seeing out the fourth set to win the game.

"I just tried to stay solid," said Murray. "It was a tough match but I feel better than I did in the first match."

Kvitova's elimination, meant that the number 2,3 and 4th seeded players have now been knocked out of the competition.

"I'm very disappointed," said Kvitova. "I wanted to win today, and unfortunately I didn't.

"I think she played really unbelievable tennis and she put a lot of balls back. Almost all of them. For me it was very difficult just to play only on the winners."

Djokovic defeated Sam Querrey 6-3 6-2 6-2, while Federer defeated Australia's Sam Groth 6-4 6-4 6-4 t
