Andy Murray has progressed to the next stage of the US Open tournament after he defeated Andrey Kuznetsov in their third round match at Flushing Meadows.
The former US open champion qualified for the round of 16,needing four sets to overcome the Russian in a 6-1 7-5 4-6 6-2 sets victory.
Murray was unstoppable in the first set,racing on to an early lead,and he consolidated in the second set.
However Kuznetsov regrouped and took the third set,but he could not sustain the tempo as he gave up,with Murray seeing out the fourth set to win the game.
"I just tried to stay solid," said Murray. "It was a tough match but I feel better than I did in the first match."
Meanwhile in the Women's draw Petra Kvitova suffered a shock loss to Aleksandra Krunic who defeated her in straight sets, 6-4 6-4.
Kvitova's elimination,meant that the number 2,3 and 4th seeded players have now been knocked out of the competition.
"I'm very disappointed," said Kvitova. "I wanted to win today, and unfortunately I didn't.
"I think she played really unbelievable tennis and she put a lot of balls back. Almost all of them. For me it was very difficult just to play only on the winners."
Other top seeds Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer both won in straight sets to advance into the next phase of the competition.
Djokovic defeated Sam Querrey 6-3 6-2 6-2, while Federer defeated Australia's Sam Groth 6-4 6-4 6-4 t
"My game is peaking at the right time, at the right tournament. This is where I want to play my best tennis," said Djokovic.
Also in the women's draw,Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova cruised into the next round with their wins.
Serena beat Varvara Lepchenko 6-3 6-3 to progress in the competition while Sharapova secured a 6-2 6-4 win over Sabine Lisicki. .
