MTN for years has been working hard to acquire Nigeria’s last standing CDMA operator, Visafone, and they've succeeded according to recent reports.
This is the final nail in the coffin for CDMA operations in the country. GSM has won what was a brutal war and a single prisoner wasn't taken.
Here are what MTN's expected to do to Visafone in the near future:
1. Laying off of staff. This is expected and according to rumors has already started. Reports say workers were asked to sign a resignation letter and get 2 to 3 months of benefit or be sacked.
2. Convert existing infrastructure and software to support 4G LTE. Visafone’s CDMA licence covers a frequency band that is hot for LTE operations. With the acquisition, MTN now has the capacity to provide 4G LTE services in the country without having to wait for the NCC to throw open 4G Licensing to GSM operators. And it is 100% legal.
We can expect the launch of MTN's 4G LTE services in Nigeria any time soon.
