Millions of Whatsapp users are in danger of being hacked.
A bug in the popular messaging service allows hackers to distribute malware, including ransomware, which demands victims pay a fee to regain access to their files, security firm Check Point has warned.
Ransomware blocks access to phones and leaves owners at the mercy of its creator - who mostly threatens to erase all data on the phone if a fee isn't paid.
The vulnerability affects only the web-based version of the service.
WhatsApp was alerted to the problem at the end of last month and immediately issued a patch.
Check Point urged users to update their WhatsApp software immediately to take advantage of the fix.
