ONE morning, Esmé Weijun Wang woke up to the discovery that she was dead.
It was exactly two years ago today — November 5, 2013 — and Ms Wang hadn’t been feeling normal for weeks.
In the month leading up to her untimely demise, she felt a growing anxiety; signals and warnings, as she described it. So she busied herself with work in a “desperate” attempt to “assemble rituals or structures that will somehow ward off the anxiety”. She wallpapered her house, rearranged her desk, read self help books and managed her Filofax.
But nothing seemed to ward off the growing feeling that something terrible was about to happen. For Ms Wang, ritual “was not the solution; there was no solution”.
