The Federal Government's approval of a significant pay rise for civil servants ahead of May Day has sparked mixed reactions from various stakeholders. The increment, ranging from 25% to 35%, across different consolidated salary structures, was announced by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) swiftly rejected the proposal, labeling it "a waste of time" and emphasizing the need for a living wage instead. Amidst calls for better wages, workers across different states expressed disappointment with the government's handling of the minimum wage issue. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also weighed in, criticizing the administration's failure to address workers' plight and escalating economic challenges.

As the nation commemorates Labour Day, the debate over fair wages and workers' rights intensifies, with many demanding concrete action from the government to alleviate their financial burdens and improve living standards.
