The National Sports Commission(NSC) have revealed that they spent N15million,on Team Nigeria that participated at the just concluded World Athletics Championship in Moscow.
At the Africa Sport in Diaspora, held in London, which was aimed of convincing athletes of African descent to ditch foreign countries and represent their country of origin,Director General of the NSC,Gbenga Elegbeleye refuted claims that the ministry does not support Nigerian athletes.
Elgbeleye gave an instance with Blessing Okagbare, who is proud representing the Nigeria.
“Blessing Okagbare did not sponsor herself to Moscow, or to any other international meet where she flew the flag of Nigeria,” Elegbeleye stressed.
“How can that be possible? It is very mischievous for anyone to make up such stories because it doesn’t stand to logic. How can an athlete pay his or her way to a tournament, yet proudly represent the country, carrying the flag of the country when she won her medal?”
“we have always supported our athletes the best way we can. For the execution of the World Athletics championships, the NSC released a sum of 15 million naira (around £63,000) to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. This money was not far short of their requested budget to cater for athletes’ flights and allowances. Blessing was a beneficiary from this payment,” he added.
“We try our best for our athletes. If Blessing incurred any costs, I’m sure she would have put in a claim and that would have been met. The fact that she paid for something doesn’t mean she ultimately foot the bill. As it is in many sports, she might have paid for something but I assure you she will always be reimbursed”.
