The suspected shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, was arrested and charged with murder and will be prosecuted as an adult.

In response to the shooting, all Barrow County schools were placed on lockdown, and classes will remain closed for the rest of the week.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith called the incident “an evil thing,” while President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden expressed condolences and called for urgent action on gun control. Biden stated, “We cannot continue to accept this as normal,” highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in schools.
This shooting marks the first school mass killing of the 2023-24 academic year and adds to the alarming statistics surrounding gun violence, with at least 144 incidents reported in the previous academic year.
