A tragic incident occurred at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Wildlife Park in Abeokuta, Ogun State when a lion fatally mauled a handler, Babaji Daule. The 35-year-old, who hailed from Bauchi State, lost his life after being attacked by the lion on Saturday, September 28, 2024.
According to police reports, Daule, a trained handler, had been attending to the lion when the unfortunate event took place. It was revealed that he failed to properly secure the lion's enclosure before entering its vicinity, which allowed the animal to break free. The lion attacked Daule, causing severe injuries to his neck.
Ogun State Police Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident. The report was made by the Chief Security Officer of the presidential library. Despite attempts to save Daule, he was declared dead after being rushed to Ijaye General Hospital in Abeokuta.
The lion was eventually subdued after being shot by security personnel to release its grip on the handler. Daule’s body was taken to the mortuary, and authorities are investigating the incident.
