On Saturday, four individuals were rescued from the debris of a collapsed two-story building in Kubwa, Abuja. The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) confirmed the incident, with acting Director-General Florence Wenegieme providing details. The structure, located near Cupid Hotel on Sultan Dasuki Road, Phase 2, Site 2, in the Bwari Area Council, was initially a hotel before being converted into residential apartments with 45 self-contained rooms.
FEMD was alerted to the collapse at around 6:45 a.m. by passersby and a distress call to their 112 emergency toll-free number. Emergency teams quickly mobilized to the scene, successfully rescuing four people from the rubble. Two of the survivors were taken to Kubwa General Hospital for medical treatment. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to ensure no one else remains trapped.
The emergency response involved multiple agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), FCT Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigeria Police Force. Mrs. Wenegieme urged property developers to adhere strictly to building codes and avoid using substandard materials to prevent such tragedies in the future.
