CAF has addressed concerns over the Super Eagles’ prolonged detainment at a Libyan airport ahead of their AFCON 2025 qualifier. Nigerian Sports Minister John Enoh stressed the team’s safety as a top priority, calling for accountability and questioning CAF's insistence on proceeding with the match amid security issues.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has responded to the situation involving the Super Eagles, who have been stranded at a Libyan airport ahead of their 2025 AFCON qualifier. Lux September, CAF's Head of Communications, stated that the organization is aware of the issue and is in communication with both the Nigerian and Libyan teams. In response, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) lodged a formal complaint with CAF, seeking intervention.
Nigerian Sports Minister John Enoh emphasized that the primary concern is the team's safety, not simply adhering to CAF's insistence on proceeding with the match. He stated, "I participated in a conference call with CAF’s President and Secretary General, stressing that Nigeria prioritizes the team’s safety and safe return over the match itself." Enoh urged the CAF to work closely with Nigeria to ensure the Super Eagles’ security, noting that the Libyan football federation should face repercussions for the incident.
The situation has raised concerns over Nigeria's participation in the upcoming match, with calls for CAF to focus on the team's safe repatriation. Enoh underscored that this incident demands a strong response and accountability, questioning whether it is appropriate for Nigeria to proceed with the match given the security risks.
