Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural group, has expressed his concern over President Bola Tinubu's certificate scandal, stating that the Nigerian populace should be ashamed. In a 41-minute interview with PUNCH, Adebanjo emphasized that no honest person could defend Tinubu on this matter.
During the presidential election tribunal, Atiku Abubakar contested the authenticity of the Chicago State University (CSU) certificate presented by Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Tinubu had claimed he lost his original certificates and provided a replacement CSU diploma.
The university later released Tinubu's academic records, confirming the certificate's authenticity. However, Adebanjo argued that without technicalities, the situation was damaging.
He questioned why Tinubu defenders still supported him and said, "This is what makes me sad in this country, and those still saying something in defense of this ugly situation, where we should cover our faces as Nigerians, that the man we produced as our president has this baggage. I am concerned."
Adebanjo mentioned that he had initially defended Tinubu on the certificate scandal based on the information he had at the time but had become increasingly troubled by the emerging facts.
