The remains of the former governor, Akeredolu, arrived in Nigeria from Germany, where he passed away on December 26, 2023. The solemn return was marked by a ceremony at the airport on Friday, January 5, 2024, at approximately 3:39 p.m.

The heart-wrenching scene unfolded as the wife of the late governor, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, accompanied by his children and siblings led by Prof. Wole Akeredolu, the immediate younger brother, received the body. The emotional reception extended beyond the immediate family, with notable figures including Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, and Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbi Talabi, participating in the ceremony. A representative of Osun State Governor, Senator Demola Adeleke, also received the body.

The gathering at the airport further included dignitaries such as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Princess Oladunni Odu, and members of the state executive council. Engr. Ade Adetimehin, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, and Hon. Gboyega Adefarati, a member of the House of Representatives, were also present to pay their respects.

As the plane's cargo doors opened, revealing the casket containing Akeredolu's remains, an atmosphere of grief enveloped the airport. The collective sorrow was palpable as family members, followers, friends, and associates struggled to contain their emotions. Tears flowed freely as the body of the late governor was lowered from the plane, marking the beginning of a farewell that resonated with the impact of his life.
