Victims of the recent building demolitions in Lagos, particularly in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, are grappling with the challenge of finding alternative shelters for their families.

The Federal Housing Authority initiated the demolition of houses, marking 677 and partially demolishing 744 for alleged violations of housing and development regulations. Many affected structures were residential, causing homeowners to struggle with securing new accommodations. The short eviction notice caught victims off guard, leaving them unprepared and unable to properly remove their belongings. Frustrated homeowners, like Paul Michaels, lamented the situation, emphasizing the difficulty of being displaced from their homes.

Some victims have resorted to sleeping in their workplaces, while others have moved their families to hotels, incurring additional costs. The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, refuted claims that the demolitions targeted a particular ethnic group, asserting that the structures were erected without approval during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.
