In a tragic incident in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, armed bandits targeted hunters, resulting in 18 fatalities and several injuries. The attacks occurred in two separate incidents, with 15 hunters losing their lives during a battle near Maihula town, and three others killed in an ambush near Dakka town.
Reports indicate that a large group of gunmen attempted to invade Bali town and surrounding villages but were met with resistance from the hunters. The hunters, while bravely confronting the bandits, suffered casualties, with some managing to escape but sustaining serious injuries.
According to local sources, the bandits, equipped with superior weapons, engaged the hunters in a fierce battle. The Kur of Bali Chiefdom, Mahamud Abubakar, explained that the hunters aimed to prevent the terrorists from invading Bali town, but the situation escalated into a bloody encounter.
Adamu Dantala, the State Chairman of the Hunters Association, emphasized the need for government and community support to arm the hunters adequately. He revealed that the hunters receive no financial assistance for the families of the deceased or for treating the injured.
This tragic event follows a previous attack last week in Ussa Local Government and Yantu special development area, where over 12 people lost their lives to suspected bandits. The police spokesperson expressed unawareness of the recent incident, stating he was part of a government delegation visiting the areas affected by the previous attack.
