The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petition has escalated its confrontation with top government officials, issuing a warrant of arrest for Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Oluwatoyin Madein, the Accountant General of the Federation. The committee, led by Fred Agbedi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bayelsa, made the decisive move on Tuesday, citing the officials' repeated refusal to appear before them and respond to inquiries about their operations.
Agbedi emphasized the committee's commitment to timely proceedings and revealed that the CEOs had been invited four times without any response. Frustrated by their non-compliance, the committee, in a motion led by Agbedi, mandated the Inspector General of Police, through a warrant of arrest meticulously processed by Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House, to bring Cardoso, Madein, and 17 others before the committee.
The committee, chaired by Michael Irom, an APC member representing Cross River, stressed the urgency of the matter, setting a deadline of December 14 for the Inspector General of Police to ensure the appearance of the CEOs. The warrants of arrest mark an unprecedented move in the ongoing standoff, raising questions about the nature of the questions posed to the officials and the potential implications for the broader financial landscape. As tensions escalate, the nation watches closely to see how this high-stakes confrontation unfolds in the coming days
