The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a directive for its members to participate in the nationwide workers' strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, conveyed the compliance directive to zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons nationwide.
The nationwide strike, announced by the NLC on Monday, November 13, stems from the assault on NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, on November 1 in Imo State. Despite a restraining order from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria on Friday, ASUU aligns with NLC's action, citing concerns over socio-economic challenges and unmet demands.
ASUU calls on the federal government to address issues such as university revitalization, autonomy, academic freedom, removal from IPPIS, and amendment of the NUC Act.
The union also rejects President Bola Tinubu's dissolution of university Governing Councils and condemns the directive for federal universities to remit 40% of their Internally Generated Funds to the government. ASUU reaffirms its commitment to resist the imposition of Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards and condemns the attack on the NLC President in Imo State. The union demands the unconditional release of all withheld salaries and urges the government to resolve outstanding issues related to the previous strike
