Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike, made waves on Wednesday as they attended the People's Democratic Party (PDP) national caucus meeting in Abuja. This significant gathering precedes the party's National Executive Committee meeting, scheduled for Thursday, where crucial decisions regarding leadership and party unity are expected to be discussed.
For Wike, the former Rivers state governor, this marks his first appearance at a PDP meeting since the 2023 presidential election. Known for his vocal opposition to Atiku's presidential campaign last year and his acceptance of a ministerial role in President Bola Tinubu's cabinet, Wike's presence underscores the evolving dynamics within the party.
The caucus meeting, a part of a series of pre-NEC meetings, brought together key stakeholders, including governors elected on the PDP platform, members of the national assembly, the Board Of Trustees, and select members of the PDP National Working Committee. Among the governors sighted at the closed-door meeting were Sherif Oborevwori (Delta State), Douye Diri (Bayelsa State), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa State), among others.
In another development, Senator Iyorcha Ayu, the embattled National Chairman of the PDP, withdrew his appeal challenging his removal from office. Ayu's decision, believed to be linked to the upcoming NEC meeting, follows his suspension by the executive committee of the PDP in Igyorov ward, Kogi State, over alleged anti-party activities and failure to fulfill party obligations.
A Federal High Court ruling last year upheld the party's decision to sack Senator Ayu, prompting his withdrawal of the appeal. This move signals a potential shift in the party's internal dynamics as it prepares for critical discussions on its future trajectory.
As the PDP navigates through these internal challenges and prepares for its NEC meeting, the presence of Atiku Abubakar, Nyesom Wike, and other key stakeholders underscores the significance of these deliberations in shaping the party's direction in the coming months.
