Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, clarifies that he remains in charge of the team after confusion over his role. Eguavoen led the Eagles in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda and will discuss future matches with the NFF. He denied any resignation rumors.
Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has clarified that he remains in charge of the national team, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Speaking at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, he explained that his mandate for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers included overseeing two matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda. Eguavoen denied any claims that he had stepped down, attributing the confusion to media misinterpretations.
He emphasized that after the two games, he would sit down with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to discuss the future of the remaining qualifying matches. Eguavoen stressed the importance of avoiding negative stories during this period, saying, "I am still in charge as the technical director and leading the Super Eagles at this moment."
Eguavoen took charge after Bruno Labbadia declined the role due to a tax disagreement. Under his leadership, the Super Eagles secured a 3-0 victory against Benin but were held to a 0-0 draw by Rwanda.
The coach’s clarification seeks to end speculation surrounding his role as he continues to work with the NFF for the team's upcoming matches.
