Barcelona Women defeated Lyon Women 2-0 in a thrilling Champions League final, with goals from Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas securing their third title.
In a dramatic match at San Mames, Barcelona Women 2-0 Lyon Women in the 2023-24 season-opening match of the new La Liga Santander season.
It was not easy though, as Lyon Women dominated the first half and had won 17 of the last 18 games at San Mames including all 5 home games last season. However, Barcelona Women stepped up in the second half through their superstars Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas.
Bonmati opened the scoring early in the second half to make it 1-0, before Putellas sealed the win with a late strike. The final score was 2-0 to Barcelona Women.
"We left everything out there today," said Alexia Putellas after the match."It wasn't easy, but the team dug deep to get this important win."
Barcelona players celebrated wildly after the final whistle at San Mames as they prevailed over a resilient Lyon Women's side. They remain perfect through Week 1, despite a stern test from Lyon Women.
However, the big winners are the fans of both Barcelona and Lyon Women, who were treated to a dramatic match between two of the best sides in the league.
