Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie rejoices after receiving a call-up to the Super Eagles by new coach Bruno Labbadia. Obasogie, a standout performer in the NPFL, aims to secure the starting goalkeeper position, competing against Maduka Okoye and Stanley Nwabali as he seeks his international debut.
Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has expressed his excitement after being named in the Super Eagles squad by new head coach Bruno Labbadia. This marks Obasogie's second call-up to the national team, following his first invitation last November. Although he was part of the squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, he did not make his debut during those matches, which both ended in 1-1 draws.
Obasogie took to Twitter to share his joy, crediting his late mother’s prayers for his success. “The son of a praying mother even in death, the prayers still flow,” he tweeted. The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), winning the Golden Glove award for the 2023/24 season after recording 18 clean sheets, a new NPFL record.
As he joins the Super Eagles camp, Obasogie will compete with Udinese’s Maduka Okoye and Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali for the starting goalkeeper position. Nwabali has been the first choice after an impressive AFCON campaign earlier this year, but Obasogie’s outstanding recent form could give him a chance to secure the top spot under Labbadia’s guidance. The competition is set to be fierce as the team prepares for upcoming challenges.
