Gunmen abducted 20 medical and dental students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos in Benue State while they were traveling to an annual convention in Enugu. The police are investigating the incident, part of a troubling rise in kidnappings across Nigeria.
In a distressing incident in Benue State, gunmen have abducted 20 medical and dental students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos. The students were en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu when they were seized by the assailants near Otukpo on Thursday evening.
The abduction has been confirmed by Catherine Anene, the state police spokesperson, who stated that an investigation is currently underway. The students' abduction is part of a troubling rise in kidnapping incidents across Nigeria. Recent kidnappings have targeted various individuals, including a local government chairman and journalists.
Earlier this month, gunmen attacked the home of Zacchaeus Michael, caretaker chairman of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area in Kogi State. Although Michael escaped, his aides were taken. In July, journalists Abdulgafar Alabelewe and Abdulraheem Aodu were abducted in Kaduna while covering news for The Nation and Blueprint newspapers.
