On July 19, 2024, gunmen attacked the Mbache ward in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of 18 residents. The attackers also kidnapped a father and his two children. According to Justine Shaku, the caretaker chairman of the LGA, the assault occurred around 11 PM. Despite a prompt alert to local military forces, the gunmen had already caused significant casualties and abductions before the troops could arrive. The victims were reportedly gathered and executed in one location.
Following the attack, Shaku, along with other local officials, notified the commissioner of police, who was expected to visit the scene. The council chairman expressed concern over the recurring violence in the area, noting that kidnappings and attacks had intensified recently. He criticized the security situation, highlighting that while June had seen severe security issues, the current month had been relatively calm until this incident. Shaku described the perpetrators as "local terrorists," expressing hope for improved security measures and reassurance from Governor Hyacinth Alia.
Sewuese Anene, the police public relations officer, confirmed the attack and stated that investigations were underway. He assured that security had been strengthened in the area and urged residents to remain calm and restrained.
