Bode George, former PDP Deputy National Chairman, advised Atiku Abubakar to postpone his presidential ambitions until 2031, citing the need for a southern president and adherence to party rules. George emphasized fairness and the importance of leadership transition, especially as Atiku approaches an advanced age.
Chief Bode George, the former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to postpone any plans for another presidential run until 2031. George stressed the importance of a southern presidency from 2023 to 2031, considering the current political dynamics in Nigeria and the guidelines set by the PDP's constitution.
As Atiku will be 81 years old by the next election cycle, George recommended that he step aside to allow younger leaders to emerge, drawing a parallel with the leadership transition exemplified by U.S. President Joe Biden. He noted, "Given the current political landscape, this is the most suitable and logical approach for our party."
George highlighted the significance of Section 7, Sub-section 3(C) of the PDP Constitution, which emphasizes the importance of zoning and rotation to maintain fairness within the party. He firmly argued that the presidency should not return to the North in 2027, following President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure.
"If Atiku is still keen on running, I advise him as a friend and loyal party member to consider waiting until 2031, when he will be 85," George stated. He reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, stressing the need to uphold the party's principles of justice and fairness.
