Former President Muhammadu Buhari revealed improved health after leaving office in 2023. Speaking at an APC meeting in Katsina, he attributed the improvement to reduced stress from Nigeria’s leadership complexities. Buhari’s comments highlight the toll of governance on health and reignite conversations about supporting leaders during and after office.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed significant improvements in his health since stepping down from office on May 29, 2023. Speaking during an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting in Katsina State, Buhari shared that life outside the presidency has positively impacted his well-being.

While serving as President of Nigeria, Buhari faced health challenges that required him to seek medical treatment abroad multiple times, sparking public concern. Reflecting on his time in office, he highlighted the immense pressure and complexities of leading a nation as diverse and dynamic as Nigeria.

“Those outside the corridors of power do not understand the complexities and difficulties facing Nigeria,” he said. “My health has improved since leaving office. People who visited me told me I look better than before.”

Buhari’s tenure, which spanned two terms, ended with his handing over to President Bola Tinubu. Throughout his presidency, the former leader often faced scrutiny over his health and ability to manage Nigeria’s challenges.

Now, free from the demands of public office, Buhari appears to be in better spirits and health. His remarks have reignited discussions about the physical and mental toll of high-level governance in Nigeria.
