In response to the tragic wave of violence in Plateau State, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) organized a powerful rally named the 'Plateau Peace Walk.' Led by CAN Chairman Rev Polycarp Lubo and joined by Rev Dr Stephen Panya, President of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), and other prominent Christian leaders, the rally aimed to express discontent over the continuous killings in the state and other regions of the country.
The solemn procession witnessed somber-faced members of the Christian community mourning the Christmas Eve killings in Jos, Plateau State's capital. The rally, supported by grieving residents, culminated at the Government House in Jos, where Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang received the crowd.
The recent Christmas Eve attack in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas left over 200 dead, prompting both local and international outrage. The Christian leaders, wielding placards, called for decisive government action and protection against aggressors.
Despite calls for citizens to bear arms, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, argued against self-defense, fearing it could lead to anarchy. The rally underscores the urgency for concrete measures to address the escalating violence and protect vulnerable communities in North-West and central Nigeria.
