Cardinal Onaiyekan, the Bishop Emeritus of Abuja, has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, accusing him of dishonesty in the conduct of the 2023 elections. Speaking during the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Jesuit Memorial College in Port Harcourt, the Cardinal expressed concerns about forged certificates and rigged elections and emphasized the importance of truth in moving the country forward.
He called for transparency and honesty, stating, "We should refuse to accept a situation where elections are rigged, and you are told to go to court.
These things have consequences." Cardinal Onaiyekan insisted on the value of truth and honesty and expressed hope for a better future.
Despite INEC's declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 2023 presidential election, the Cardinal emphasized that truth should prevail, irrespective of court decisions. He encouraged Nigerians to seek the truth and expressed his belief in the nation's potential for positive change.
