The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, on charges of alleged N1.6bn procurement fraud. The court scheduled the continuation of the trial for January 18 and 19, 2024.

Emefiele faces a six-count amended charge related to the alleged procurement of vehicles. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail on November 17, 2023, with bail conditions including N300m and two sureties.

At the recent hearing, a Prosecution Witness from the Corporate Affairs Commission stated that Emefiele was neither the owner nor a shareholder of the company awarded the N1.2bn vehicle supply contract.

The witness presented documents detailing the company's incorporation in 2016, and named Aminu Yaro, Maryam Abdullahi, and Saadatu Yaro as joint owners. Emefiele's lawyer mentioned that the client had not yet met the bail conditions.

The former CBN governor was present in court, while the EFCC and Federal Government representatives declined to comment on the proceedings.
