The Lagos State government has clarified its stance on private school fees, stating that it holds no authority over the fees charged by private schools within the state. Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, addressed the matter during a ministerial press briefing, responding to inquiries regarding Charterhouse, a new school in Lekki, Lagos, which recently announced a fee of N42 million per annum per pupil.
Expressing astonishment at the exorbitant amount, the commissioner emphasized that private schools have the autonomy to set their fees based on their perceived value and services offered. He underscored the role of parental choice in selecting schools based on affordability and other considerations.
While affirming the government's support for private sector involvement in education, he emphasized that any private school found violating regulations would face consequences.
The commissioner's remarks come amidst public concern over rising school fees and the accessibility of quality education
