Amidst the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar has revealed a transformative plan for Nigeria to boast the largest electric mass transit fleet in Africa.
The Federal Government, under Tuggar's leadership, aims to escalate the number of electric buses from 100 to an impressive 1,000, marking a significant commitment to combatting climate change.
In a statement from Mr Alkasim Abdulkadir, the Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Tuggar emphasized Nigeria's dedication to ambitious yet attainable climate goals, ratified through the Climate Change Act and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).
Tuggar highlighted the multifaceted impact of this initiative, aiming not only to reduce emissions but also to generate jobs and catalyze industrialization across critical sectors.
Nigeria's vision extends to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, with Tuggar urging international collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility in the face of the escalating climate crisis.
Additionally, he called on developed nations to make financial commitments to support developing nations in their efforts to address climate challenges and emphasized the importance of transparent climate targets aligned with the principles of the Paris Agreement
